Press Release: NOXX Dispensary, Forty Acres Enterprises Join Forces to Support Grand Rapids Cannabis Entrepreneurs

For every Michigan cannabis business that manages to open, there are scores of entrepreneurs whose dream never materializes. Two longtime cannabis community supporters and friends are working to change that dynamic.

Their grassroots effort centers on creating a retail platform for startups, coupled with a business accelerator, to celebrate the cannabis culture of Grand Rapids and keep jobs and social-equity opportunities local.

Forty Acres Enterprises, a Grand Rapids-based holding company, and the NOXX retail cannabis chain are working together to open a new dispensary at 2440 28th St. SE, with a grand opening in August. The collaboration is an extension of the partnership and friendship of Forty Acres owner Darel Ross and NOXX CEO and owner Tommy Nafso. The store will feature dedicated shelf space for 40 Acres House of Cannabis products as well as other flower, prerolls, edibles and more.

“My goal is to try to provide as much opportunity through entrepreneurship as possible,” said Ross.

Forty Acres Enterprises is a Black-owned company that is a staple of the Grand Rapids community and operates in real estate, development, food & hospitality and cannabis. The company, whose name references the Civil War-era “40 acres and a mule” promise the federal government made to former slaves, has a straightforward mission: “To model Black excellence & wealth-building—showing the community that it can be done.”

The two companies are also co-hosting and co-sponsoring The High Five Pitch Competition, which gives cannabis entrepreneurs a chance to win $20,000 and guaranteed shelf space at partner dispensaries based on a presented idea and five-minute sales pitch.

The competition is one facet of the High Five “Pitch to Placement” Accelerator Program—a series of three cohorts that provide marketing, technical assistance, brand creation resources and access to investment capital. Select participants will be able to pilot their products in local dispensaries. Ross said the accelerator is a community-wide investment in local cannabis that should serve to support local entrepreneurs of color in greater Grand Rapids.

Making Cannabis More Inclusive

Nafso said Ross’s passion to continue to create real change for Grand Rapids small business owners with more opportunities for those who are underrepresented aligns perfectly with NOXX’s vision.

“At NOXX we embrace a culture of acceptance and inclusivity. Those values are at the core of our brand,” said Nafso, a former Michigan Assistant Attorney General who pivoted to the cannabis industry and went on to open 17 cannabis dispensaries in Michigan and Missouri.

Ross directs Forty Acres with a focus on launching “unapologetic Black brands and companies,” hiring local residents and supporting the advocacy of local nonprofits.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to partner with Darel and everyone at 40 Acres House of Cannabis,” said Nafso. “NOXX is deeply interconnected with the Grand Rapids community—and we count ourselves fortunate to have such meaningful partnerships with the local community.”

NOXX plans to open seven Michigan cannabis dispensaries in the next year, and establish a home office in its 20,000-square-foot Grand Rapids production facility. Nafso said that once the production facility and the first three dispensaries are operational, NOXX will have created approximately 150 new jobs in the greater Grand Rapids area. Open positions can be viewed on the NOXX employment portal.

Celebrating with Sweepstakes

To celebrate the partnership and entry into the Grand Rapids market, NOXX is holding a first-of-its-kind sweepstakes series with giveaways including a $10,000 cash grand prize, a $5,000 cash prize, $1,000 of gas gift cards, VIP tickets to the Breakaway Festival’s Space Deck, free cannabis for a year and a pair of Oculus virtual reality goggles.

Michigan residents 21 and older can visit noxx.com to enter the sweepstakes (no purchase necessary) and automatically activate a myNOXX Rewards account, the cannabis retailer’s inclusive loyalty program.

Starting July 8, NOXX will randomly draw a myNOXX Rewards member’s name to award the initial sweepstakes prize of the Oculus VR goggles. The giveaways will continue for the following six Fridays. The $10,000 grand-prize winner will be announced Aug. 19 when the series concludes. A complete sweepstakes series calendar can be found here.
